I'm Eric Goldstein, a Boca Raton photographer. A bat mitzvah photoshoot is a portrait session before the big day. Families use the photos for the invitation, the welcome table, a slideshow and thank-you cards. The same ideas work for a bar mitzvah.
Where to Shoot in South Florida
- South Beach Park, Boca Raton. A quiet beach. Go at sunrise or just before sunset.
- Spanish River Park, Boca Raton. Shaded trails and quiet beach access. Morning or sunset.
- Red Reef Park, Boca Raton. Dunes, boardwalks and ocean in one place. Afternoon or golden hour.
- Mizner Park, Boca Raton. Mediterranean architecture and palm-lined walkways. Morning or golden hour.
My Boca Raton photo spots guide has the address, the best time and what to wear at each one, and the other South Florida guides cover Delray Beach, Jupiter and Fort Lauderdale.
Ideas for the Session
- A portrait in the outfit for the service
- A portrait with the tallit, if your family wants one
- Something that shows what your child loves, like a sport, an instrument or dance
- Siblings together
- Parents and grandparents
- A candid walk instead of a posed shot
- The family pet
What to Wear
Two outfits is plenty. Pick colors that suit the setting, skip busy patterns and big logos, and wear shoes that work on sand or grass. Bring water and a brush for hair if you're near the ocean, because wind moves everything.
When to Schedule It
Book the session a few weeks to a few months before the date, so the photos are ready for the invitation or the welcome display. Plan it for the last stretch of daylight before sunset, when the light is softest. Keep it short and let your child choose the spot. Relaxed portraits look better than long ones.
The Session and the Day Are Separate
A portrait session is its own booking. Day-of coverage includes the service, family portraits, the hora and the party. I wrote how to plan that in how to plan the photos for a bar or bat mitzvah.
